Titanium-based lithium adsorbent can adsorb lithium ions from a variety of solutions. It has a stable crystal structure and three-dimensional ion exchange channels. It has strong selectivity for lithium ion radius and valence state, and has extremely small adsorption of cations such as magnesium, sodium, potassium, boron, and calcium in brine. The adsorbent has the characteristics of easy desorption, small dissolution loss, high elution concentration, can be regenerated repeatedly, and has a long service life. It is suitable for packing in lithium extraction adsorption towers to simplify the process flow. Its unique particle size distribution and morphology reduce the resistance of water flowing through the adsorption tower, and can maintain smooth liquid flow even in high-viscosity concentrated brine. Manganese-based adsorbent is a lithium adsorption and separation material with manganese-containing compounds as the structural skeleton. The product appearance is black spherical particles. It has good adsorption and separation effects for solutions with different lithium contents. It is the most applicable type of adsorbent product today.
The research on manganese ion sieves began in the 1970s. Through the synthesis of lithium and manganese sources, it can be applied to alkaline salt lakes, but not to strongly alkaline salt lakes. The theoretical powder adsorption capacity can reach 50-60mg/g. At present, the adsorption capacity of some products after granulation is about 4mg/g. Thanks to the unique spinel structure and three-dimensional network channels of manganese oxides, it has good selectivity and adsorption for lithium, and has the characteristics of stable chemical properties, high adsorption capacity and low cost. But the core problem is that the loss of manganese in use will cause the structure to collapse (manganese dissolution) and then lead to a sharp decrease in capacity. Secondly, the eluent needs to use hydrochloric acid or sodium sulfate as the eluent, and the waste liquid needs to be treated in an environmentally friendly manner. At present, some lithium extraction technology companies in China can develop and produce manganese adsorbents, but there has not been large-scale industrial application. Material modification is more concentrated at the laboratory level. We believe that manganese adsorbents have great application prospects in the development of Tibetan salt lakes in the future.
Titanium ion sieve adsorbents: industrialization is being gradually promoted, and pilot cases have been available. The research on titanium ion sieves began in 1988. It is a new type of ion sieve prepared to overcome the high dissolution rate of manganese. It mixes lithium sources with titanium sources such as titanium dioxide and is suitable for strong alkaline salt lakes. At present, its adsorption capacity is similar to that of aluminum, and the capacity after granulation is about 3~5mg/g. Titanium ion sieves have strong selectivity for lithium and rarely adsorb cations. The dissolution rate is low after elution, the lithium elution rate is high, the properties are stable, safe and green, and the adsorption capacity is large. However, this type of adsorbent also requires acid elution, and most of them are powdered. The technology is not yet fully mature, and challenges such as poor permeability, long adsorption cycle, and reduced capacity after granulation need to be overcome. In terms of application, titanium adsorbents have currently entered the field test stage, such as Jiuwu Hi-Tech's 100-ton lithium hydroxide pilot production line at the Zabuye Salt Lake in Tibet.
