Chip Probing (CP) in industry practice refers to production wafer-level electrical test (“wafer sort”) performed before wafer singulation, where a fully automated wafer prober precisely positions the wafer and probe needles/tips contact each die’s pads/bumps to execute electrical/functional tests and generate a wafer map/binning (good vs. defective and multi-bin grade). CP is therefore the “die-level gate” that converts fab output into test-screened die populations for downstream assembly, and it becomes especially critical when the value of each die (or the cost of downstream integration) is high.

Commercially, CP is operated either in-house (IDM/OSAT captive test floors) or outsourced to OSAT/test service providers, and is commonly priced by wafer / die / insertion (touchdown) and test time, with engineering charges for test program development, probe card solutions, and yield analytics. The CP “test cell” is a tightly coupled stack: ATE tester + prober + probe card/interface hardware + software, with standardized docking/interface architectures to integrate testers with multiple prober platforms. Leading OSATs explicitly bundle CP with broader test portfolios (wafer probe plus final/strip/system-level test, burn-in, end-of-line processing), while high-mix service providers emphasize prober fleets, docking options, and temperature/wafer-size coverage.

Current CP demand is being pulled by three structurally strong forces: (1) advanced packaging and heterogeneous integration, where “known-good” components are needed to avoid scrapping high-value stacks (e.g., TSV/microbump-based HBM); (2) cost/throughput pressure, pushing higher parallelism and higher-speed probing capability; and (3) reliability control, where touchdowns/retest management, contact resistance monitoring, and automated probe cleaning increasingly determine both yield stability and cost of test.
