The global PCD market is projected to grow from US$ 1253 million in 2025 to US$ 2156 million by 2032, at a CAGR of 7.9% (2026-2032), driven by critical product segments and diverse end‑use applications, while evolving U.S. tariff policies introduce trade‑cost volatility and supply‑chain uncertainty.
Global PCD diamond sales reached 31.79 million pieces in 2025, with an average price of US$39.42 per piece.
PCD diamond, also known as polycrystalline diamond or sintered diamond, is a composite superhard material made by sintering diamond microparticles (particle size ranging from nanometers to hundreds of micrometers) with a metal binder (mainly cobalt (Co), acting as a catalyst and binder) under high temperature and high pressure (HPHT, 5.0-6.0 GPa, 1600℃). Adjacent diamond particles are bonded by C-C chemical bonds, forming a coherent polycrystalline structure, combining the extremely high hardness of diamond with the toughness of metal. PCD hardness can reach 8000 HV, approximately 8-12 times that of cemented carbide, and it exhibits excellent wear resistance, but it can only be used to process non-ferrous materials (such as aluminum alloys, copper, plastics, and wood).
The supply of raw materials for PCD diamond is significantly dependent on superhard materials and highly technology-intensive, resulting in a cost structure that varies greatly depending on quality grade. Raw material costs account for 40-50% of the total cost, with diamond micron powder accounting for the largest share (approximately 30-35%). High-purity, high-strength synthetic diamond micron powder (particle size 1-30μm) is required, priced at approximately 0.5-2 yuan/carat. Metal binders (cobalt powder, nickel powder, etc.) account for 10-15%, with cobalt powder price fluctuations directly impacting costs. Energy and equipment costs account for 25-35%. HPHT sintering requires achieving 5-6 GPa high pressure and 1600℃ high temperature in a six-sided or two-sided press, resulting in huge equipment investment (single press costing several million yuan) and extremely high energy consumption, with significant costs for electricity and graphite heating elements. Notably, synthesizing one batch of PCD composite sheets takes 10-20 hours, with electricity costs accounting for over 30% of manufacturing costs. Manufacturing costs account for approximately 20-25% of the total cost, including diamond micron powder pretreatment (purification, grading), molding, sintering, post-treatment (grinding, polishing, cutting), and tool sharpening. Sharpening PCD tools requires specialized diamond wheels and precision CNC grinding machines, making the process extremely difficult. Furthermore, because PCD's hardness is second only to natural diamond, its processing can only utilize diamond wheel grinding or electrical discharge machining (EDM), resulting in low efficiency and high wheel wear, further increasing manufacturing costs. Quality control and testing costs account for 5-10%, requiring the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to inspect diamond particle size distribution, binder uniformity, and porosity, and to test performance indicators such as hardness, wear resistance, and thermal stability.
