Global sales of synthetic diamonds reached 6.67 million carats in 2025, with an average price of $352 per carat.
Single crystal diamond is one type of synthetic diamond which is also known as an artificial diamond, cultured diamond, or cultivated diamond. Single crystal diamond is also widely known as HPHT diamond or CVD diamond after the two common production methods (referring to the high-pressure high-temperature and chemical vapor deposition crystal formation methods, respectively). It is wide used in cutting tools, wheel dressing, specialty knives, burnishing tools, wear parts and other wide range of high technology application such as optical, electronic and certain mechanical applications.
The supply of raw materials for synthetic diamonds exhibits significant differences in processing methods and is highly technology-intensive, resulting in varying cost structures depending on the production method. For the HPHT process (accounting for 90% of China's production capacity), raw material costs account for 35-45% of the total cost, of which high-purity graphite powder (carbon source) accounts for 15-20%, metal catalyst powder (nickel, cobalt, and iron alloys, used as catalysts) accounts for 10-15%, and pyrophyllite/dolomite (pressure transmission and sealing medium) accounts for 5-10%. Energy and equipment costs account for 30-40%. HPHT requires a high pressure of 5-6 GPa and a high temperature of 1400-1600℃ in a six-sided top press. The investment for a single piece of equipment is 1.8 million yuan. Electricity consumption is huge. It takes 7-12 days to grow one carat diamond, and electricity costs account for more than 30% of the manufacturing cost. For CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) methods, raw material costs account for 25-35%, with methane/acetylene (carbon-containing gas) accounting for 10-15%, hydrogen for 5-10%, and single-crystal diamond substrate (seed crystal) for 10-15%. Energy and equipment costs account for 40-50%. CVD requires achieving low temperatures (800-1000℃) and low pressures (10-100 Torr) in a microwave plasma reaction chamber. A single unit requires an investment of 1-3 million RMB, with a growth cycle of 2-6 weeks, but it can produce large diamonds of 10-20 carats with higher purity (85% VVS grade). Processing and manufacturing costs account for approximately 15-20%, including cutting, grinding, and polishing (diamonds can only be processed with diamonds). Over 90% of the cutting and grinding is completed in India, while China accounts for only 3%. Overall, synthetic diamonds are mid-to-high-priced, technologically advanced, and energy-intensive new material products. Their cost structure is influenced by multiple factors, including the price of carbon sources such as graphite/methane, electricity costs, equipment depreciation, and the depth of cutting and grinding. China holds a 90% share of the global HPHT market thanks to its six-sided top-press technology and complete industrial chain (the Zhengzhou-Xuchang-Shangqiu industrial belt in Henan). However, it lags behind Europe, America, and India in CVD large-particle technology and downstream cutting, grinding, and brand retail.
