The chromium industry chain is mainly divided into three segments: upstream chromium ore, midstream chromium products, and downstream consumption.

The upstream chromium ore segment primarily consists of chromite. Midstream chromium products mainly include ferrochrome, chromium salts, and metallic chromium. Ferrochrome is further divided into high-carbon ferrochrome, medium-carbon ferrochrome, low-carbon ferrochrome, and micro-carbon ferrochrome, with high-carbon ferrochrome being the most prevalent product. Downstream consumption is mainly divided into three sectors: metallurgy, chemicals, and refractory materials. The metallurgical industry accounts for as much as 90%, with most of the chromium used in stainless steel production. The chemical industry accounts for approximately 5%, and the refractory materials industry accounts for approximately 5%.

Global chromium resources are highly concentrated. South Africa, Kazakhstan, and India account for 93% of global chromium reserves, while other countries account for only 7%. China has very few chromium ore resources and is highly dependent on imports.
