Thorium tungsten electrodes are a type of tungsten-based electrode material made by using tungsten (W) as the matrix and adding thorium oxide as a dopant. They are primarily manufactured via powder metallurgy: high-purity tungsten powder is mixed with a specific proportion of thorium oxide powder, followed by pressing, sintering, swaging, drawing, and grinding to produce electrodes with stable dimensions and excellent high-temperature performance. In 2025, the global sales volume of thorium tungsten electrodes reached 720 tons, with a production capacity of 960 tons; the average selling price was $37 per kilogram, and the average gross profit margin ranged from 25% to 35%. Due to the low electron work function of thorium oxide, its addition enhances the tungsten electrode's electron emission capability, arc stability, arc-starting performance, and current-carrying capacity.
