In mode-locked picosecond lasers, fast optical modulators (e.g., acousto-optic modulators or electroabsorption modulators) are often used to achieve mode-locking. Mode-locked picosecond lasers have the following characteristics: Short pulse width: Mode-locked picosecond lasers can generate very short light pulses, usually at the level of picoseconds (10^-12 seconds) or shorter. Such ultrashort pulse widths are important for many applications, such as material processing, biomedical imaging, and precision measurement. High peak power: The short pulses of mode-locked picosecond lasers have high peak power, making them useful in applications that require high energy density, such as laser drilling, laser cutting, and laser marking. High coherence: Mode-locking processing can make the output beam of the laser highly coherent in time and space, which is critical for some applications that require precise interference and phase stability, such as optical frequency synthesis, optical ranging and laser interference wait.
