The Hopkinson rod impact machine is an experimental setup used to simulate the mechanical behavior of materials under high velocity impact loading conditions. It is a device consisting of one or more rods, usually made of metallic materials, used to generate and transmit shock waves and measure stress and deformation of materials. The basic principle of the Hopkinson rod impact machine is to use the characteristics of the shock rod to transmit shock waves during the loading process. In the experiment, the sample is usually located in the receiving part, and when the shock wave is transmitted to the sample through the transmitting part, the sample will be subjected to high-speed shock loading. By measuring the propagation velocity, reflection and transmission parameters of the shock wave, combined with the stress and deformation measurement of the sample, the dynamic response characteristics of the material under high-speed shock conditions can be studied, such as the propagation of the stress wave, the stress-strain curve, and the fracture behavior.
