Semiconductor Process Control Systems refer to equipment and associated data platforms that use optical, electron-beam, ion-beam, X-ray, scanning-probe and other physical or chemical sensing technologies to inspect, review, measure, analyse and provide feedback on defects, critical dimensions, pattern placement, overlay, film thickness, material properties, surface topography and other process parameters during semiconductor substrate, photomask, wafer fabrication and advanced packaging processes. Their primary function is to identify manufacturing excursions and yield-loss mechanisms, determine whether individual process steps meet specified targets, and feed actionable results back to lithography, etch, deposition, CMP, cleaning, implantation and bonding operations. Inspection primarily identifies the presence and location of defects; defect review provides high-resolution imaging, classification and root-cause confirmation of detected defects; and metrology quantitatively measures specified structural, physical, material or electrical parameters. Under the scope of this report, the market includes wafer inspection and defect review systems, wafer metrology systems, mask inspection and defect review systems, and mask metrology systems. Automated FIB-SEM, TEM and other analytical platforms may be included when they are specifically configured and sold for semiconductor process development, near-line analysis or yield learning. General-purpose scientific instruments sold to non-semiconductor users, semiconductor testers and the main revenue of lithography, etch or other process tools are excluded. For diversified equipment suppliers, only products and revenue specifically attributable to inspection, review, metrology and process control are included.

Wafer inspection and defect review systems include unpatterned-wafer inspection, patterned-wafer optical inspection, e-beam inspection, defect-review SEM and wafer-edge, backside and particle-inspection systems. Wafer metrology systems include CD-SEM, e-beam metrology, optical critical-dimension metrology, overlay metrology, film-thickness and optical-property metrology, X-ray metrology, AFM, profilometry, stress and wafer-shape metrology. Mask inspection and defect review systems cover mask-blank inspection, patterned-mask inspection, EUV-mask inspection, mask defect-review SEM, pellicle inspection and aerial-image or printability evaluation. Mask metrology systems measure mask critical dimensions, pattern placement, registration, phase, transmission, reflectance and film thickness. Applications extend across silicon and compound-semiconductor substrate manufacturing, photomask production, logic and memory wafer fabrication, analog and power devices, MEMS, wafer-level packaging and panel-level packaging. KLA positions its inspection and review systems across incoming and process-tool qualification, wafer qualification, research and development, process monitoring and production-line monitoring, while Camtek and Onto address TSVs, redistribution layers, bumps, hybrid bonding, wafers, panels and stacked-die structures.

KLA offers a broad portfolio spanning wafer and reticle inspection, defect review, optical and X-ray metrology, analytics and advanced-packaging process control. Semiconductor Process Control Systems are evolving from standalone inspection or point-measurement tools toward high-sensitivity, high-throughput, three-dimensional, multimodal and closed-loop process-control platforms.
