Marine desulfurization systems, also known as marine exhaust gas cleaning systems, are wet exhaust treatment systems installed in the exhaust channels of a ship's main engines, auxiliary engines, and fuel-fired boilers. They utilize seawater or recirculating water treated with alkaline agents to absorb, dissolve, and neutralize sulfur oxides (SOx) in the exhaust gas; simultaneously, they remove a portion of particulate matter, enabling emissions to meet compliance standards equivalent to those achieved by using low-sulfur fuel.

The upstream segment of the industry chain primarily involves corrosion-resistant materials and chemical consumables. Desulfurization towers, spray components, and highly corrosive sections typically utilize 254SMO, high-alloy austenitic stainless steel, or duplex/super-duplex stainless steel, while structural supports may use carbon steel; piping for acidic wash water often employs glass fiber-reinforced epoxy resin, corrosion-resistant linings, and specialized sealing materials. Closed-loop and hybrid systems require sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, or other alkaline neutralizing agents. Midstream enterprises handle flow field design, tower fabrication, water treatment, monitoring and control systems, and marine engineering integration. The downstream market consists primarily of shipowners, ship operators, shipyards, and ship repair/retrofit facilities, generating subsequent demand for spare parts, sensor calibration, anti-corrosion maintenance, and full-lifecycle services.
