This distinction is important because a laboratory capable of routine sterility testing does not automatically possess the engineering, aerosol-generation, controlled-challenge, recovery-validation, or device-simulation capabilities required for ingress studies. ISO 11607 provides the principal international framework for packaging systems intended to maintain the sterility of terminally sterilized medical devices, while device-specific ingress studies frequently remain protocol-driven rather than governed by a single universal standard.
The global supply structure is led by North American and European laboratories. Large medical-device testing organizations combine microbiology, packaging engineering, sterilization validation, analytical testing, and regulatory documentation, allowing them to manage complex development and submission programs. A second group consists of specialized laboratories focused on microbial challenge studies or sterile-barrier validation.
