Austempering is a specialized isothermal heat-treatment process for ferrous metals, mainly ductile iron and medium-to-high carbon steels. In steel, it produces a bainitic structure; in ductile iron, it produces Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) with high strength, toughness, wear resistance, and lower distortion than many conventional quench-and-temper routes.
