Most lysis buffers contain buffer salts and ionic salts to adjust the pH and osmotic pressure of the lysis solution. Detergents are sometimes added to disrupt the membrane structure. For lysis buffers targeting protein extraction, protease inhibitors are often included and may be almost necessary in difficult cases.
