2,2,2-Trifluoroethanol (TFEA) is a critical fluorinated specialty chemical intermediate that connects fluorochemical raw materials with high-value applications including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, fluorinated functional materials, electronic chemicals and precision cleaning. TFEA, with the molecular formula C₂H₃F₃O, CAS No. 75-89-8 and molecular weight of approximately 100.04, is a low-molecular-weight fluorinated alcohol characterized by strong polarity, hydrogen-bonding capability and unique solvent properties. Compared with conventional alcohol solvents, TFEA provides enhanced reaction selectivity and fluorinated structural introduction capability due to the strong electron-withdrawing effect of the trifluoromethyl group. Industrial TFEA products are mainly supplied in two purity categories: standard industrial grade with purity generally above 99.0% and high-purity industrial grade above 99.9%, with the latter requiring stricter control of moisture, acidity, trace impurities, metal ions and batch consistency. Tosoh specifies TFEA with a molecular weight of 100.04, boiling point of 73.6°C, melting point of approximately -45°C, flash point of 30°C and density of approximately 1.391 g/cm³ at 20°C, demonstrating the product characteristics of a specialized fluorinated chemical requiring strict purification, storage and transportation management.
