Water treatment membrane materials are membranes used for purifying drinking water, wastewater, and seawater. They primarily include microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis membranes. Water treatment separation membranes offer high separation performance, high stability, low cost, and long lifespan. They are core materials for new, high-efficiency separation technologies and play a vital role in addressing water resource, environmental, and energy challenges. The industry's gross profit margin is approximately 36.0%.
Upstream raw materials for water treatment membranes are divided into two categories: organic and inorganic. Organic membranes are primarily composed of polyamides, polysulfone/polyethersulfone, PVDF, and PAN. The common "TFC" structure in RO/NF membranes consists of an ultra-thin polyamide selective layer formed by interfacial polymerization of MPD and TMC. The support layer is typically PSf/PES, supplemented by a casting solvent (NMP, DMAc, DMF), a porogen (PVP, etc.), and modifying additives. PVDF is widely used in MBR/UF membranes for its chemical resistance and mechanical strength. Inorganic membranes are primarily ceramic membranes (alumina, zirconia, titania, etc.), with smaller amounts of zeolite/silica materials, offering advantages in high-temperature, corrosion, and pollution resistance.
Downstream applications of water treatment membranes are primarily focused on industrial water, wastewater treatment, drinking water, and seawater desalination, with applications also expanding into resource recovery. Industrial applications often utilize UF/MF pretreatment combined with RO/NF to achieve softening, reuse, and zero-discharge. Wastewater treatment focuses on upgrading and reclaiming water, combining minimal footprint and stable effluent. For drinking water, MF/UF serves as a barrier, while RO provides deep desalination. Seawater desalination is primarily driven by demand from cities and industries in water-scarce regions. Other membrane applications include emergency/portable water purification, rural safe drinking water, and pretreatment for specialized industries.
