Retimers and redrivers have enabled longer physical channels in servers and PC since Peripheral Component Interface Express (PCIe) 3.0 was first introduced almost 10 years ago. A redriver is a mostly analog reach extension device designed to boost the high-frequency portions of a signal to counteract the frequency-dependent attenuation caused by the interconnect: the central processing unit (CPU) package, system board, connectors and so on. A retimer is a mixed signal analog/digital device that is protocol-aware and has the ability to fully recover the data, extract the embedded clock and retransmit a fresh copy of the data using a clean clock.

With the widespread deployment of high-speed communication standards such as PCIe 5.0/6.0, USB4, Thunderbolt 4, HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 2.0, and CXL, data transmission rates have leapt from a few Gbps to tens or even hundreds of Gbps, leading to serious issues with signal attenuation, jitter, and crosstalk. Retimers and redrivers have become essential signal conditioning components, leading to a rapid increase in market demand.

These systems rely heavily on high-speed interconnect channels such as PCIe, CXL, and SerDes links. High-end consumer electronics (such as Apple MacBooks and Microsoft Surfaces) are increasingly adopting USB4/Thunderbolt interfaces, protocols that place extremely high demands on signal quality. To ensure signal integrity in slim designs and multi-port interfaces, redrivers and retimers are widely used in motherboards, docking stations, interface cables, and other applications, driving shipment growth.
