Organoclay is a functional material produced by organically modifying layered silicate minerals, primarily bentonite, montmorillonite, or hectorite, through ion exchange with quaternary ammonium salts, amines, or other organic modifiers. The treatment converts naturally hydrophilic clay into an organophilic material capable of wetting, dispersing, and forming a three-dimensional network in oils, organic solvents, and resin systems. Major product categories include grades for low-to-medium-polarity systems, high-polarity systems, broad-polarity applications, and water-dispersible systems, as well as conventional, self-activating, easy-dispersing, and pre-activated grades. Commercial forms include powders, granules, pre-dispersed pastes, gels, and concentrated slurries. Conventional organoclays commonly require sufficient shear and polar activators such as propylene carbonate or alcohol-water blends to achieve exfoliation and full rheological development.
Organoclays are primarily used as rheology modifiers, thickeners, gelling agents, anti-settling agents, anti-sag additives, pigment-suspension agents, oil adsorbents, and polymer-reinforcement materials. Major applications include paints and coatings, printing inks, adhesives, sealants, lubricating greases, oil and gas drilling fluids, cosmetics, personal care products, plastics, rubber, environmental remediation, and industrial water treatment. In oil-based and synthetic-based drilling fluids, organoclays improve viscosity, gel strength, suspension, and cuttings-carrying capacity. In environmental applications, they are used to adsorb oils, greases, and low-solubility organic contaminants from water and sediment.
Organoclay prices are primarily determined by the purity of the base clay, montmorillonite or hectorite content, cation-exchange capacity, organic modifier type, system polarity, activation method, thermal stability, dispersion efficiency, particle-size control, whiteness, impurity content, and product certification. On an indicative bulk-purchase basis, standard powdered organoclays for coatings, inks, and drilling fluids generally cost approximately US$1,200–2,500 per metric ton. Broad-polarity, easy-dispersing, self-activating, and high-temperature drilling grades typically range from US$2,500–6,000 per metric ton. High-purity personal-care grades, low-crystalline-silica grades, specialized environmental adsorbents, and imported branded products may range from US$4,000–12,000 per metric ton. Pre-dispersed pastes, gels, and small-pack specialty products are generally sold by weight and carry substantially higher equivalent prices than standard powder products. These figures are industry estimates rather than published list prices.
The upstream supply chain includes sodium bentonite, calcium bentonite, montmorillonite, hectorite, sepiolite, attapulgite, quaternary ammonium salts, fatty amines, surfactants, polar activators, solvents, and packaging materials. Midstream production involves mineral beneficiation, purification, sodium activation, ion exchange, organic modification, washing, filtration, dehydration, drying, milling, classification, granulation, pre-activation, pre-dispersion, and performance testing. Key specifications include viscosity, thixotropic index, gel strength, dispersion fineness, moisture, whiteness, loss on ignition, particle size, thermal stability, and system compatibility. Downstream customers include coating and ink producers, oilfield-service companies, grease manufacturers, adhesive and sealant producers, cosmetics manufacturers, plastics compounders, remediation contractors, and industrial water-treatment companies.

Increasing Rheology-Control Requirements in Coatings, Inks, and Adhesives
High-solids coatings, heavy-duty anticorrosion coatings, industrial coatings, marine coatings, printing inks, and highly filled adhesives require an effective balance between storage stability, application flow, and sag resistance. Organoclays form reversible three-dimensional networks in organic media, increasing low-shear viscosity while maintaining shear-thinning behavior during application. This improves pigment suspension, anti-settling performance, sag control, and wet-film thickness. Organophilic clay is an important viscosifier and gelling agent in oil-based and synthetic-based drilling fluids. It suspends weighting materials, improves low-shear rheology, supports cuttings removal, and contributes to filtration control and filter-cake formation. Expansion in Environmental and High-Value Applications
Organoclays are organophilic and hydrophobic materials capable of adsorbing oils, greases, and selected low-solubility organic compounds from water, groundwater, and contaminated sediment. They can also be combined with activated carbon, geosynthetic materials, and filtration media in integrated remediation systems. At the same time, high-purity, tightly controlled organoclays are increasingly used as thickeners, suspension agents, and stabilizers in personal care, color cosmetics, lubricating greases, and specialty polymers. Complex Grade Selection and Activation Requirements
Organoclay performance is highly dependent on solvent polarity, resin chemistry, order of addition, shear intensity, processing temperature, and activator dosage. Conventional grades normally require adequate wetting, followed by a polar activator such as propylene carbonate or an alcohol-water blend and sufficient high-speed shear to exfoliate the clay platelets. Poor polarity matching, inadequate shear, or incorrect activator dosage can result in incomplete dispersion, coarse particles, insufficient viscosity, or loss of storage stability, increasing formulation and process-control complexity.
Natural Mineral Variability Affects Product Consistency
Natural bentonite varies by deposit in montmorillonite content, cation-exchange capacity, iron content, moisture, particle size, and color. These variations can affect modification efficiency, final viscosity, whiteness, and dispersion stability. Manufacturers must maintain strict mineral-resource management, raw-material homogenization, purification, sodium activation, modifier-ratio control, and batch testing. In automotive coatings, electronic materials, cosmetics, and high-temperature drilling fluids, relatively small batch variations may affect customer formulations and final-product quality.
Increasing Competition from Alternative Rheology Additives
Fumed silica, polyamide waxes, hydrogenated castor-oil derivatives, synthetic hectorite, associative thickeners, and polymeric rheology modifiers can replace organoclays in certain coating, adhesive, personal-care, and composite-material applications. These alternatives may provide advantages in transparency, ease of dispersion, low dosage, or compatibility with water-based formulations.
