The silicon ring is used in the dry etching machine as the focus ring, outer electrode, confinement ring. Silicon rings for etching are mainly used on 8-12 inches (i.e., 200mm-300mm) plasma etcher. In the manufacturing process of integrated circuits, high-purity silicon components and wafers are made of silicon, which makes the electrical properties of etching more uniform, so silicon rings are widely used in semiconductor etchers. The periodic consumption of silicon ring products has become an important consumable component in the wafer processing process, which directly affects the electrical properties of the wafer. For example, a silicon ring needs to be replaced after processing about 200 wafers. The market demand for silicon rings is mainly driven by the wafer processing capacity of chip factories.
By product type and manufacturing technology, silicon rings can be segmented by functional position, material property, wafer size, equipment type and process application. By functional position, they include Focus Rings, Edge Rings, Confinement Rings, Shield Rings, Insert Rings, Collar Rings, Hot Edge Rings and Protection Rings. By material property, they include single-crystal silicon rings, polycrystalline silicon rings and rings customized by low-, medium- or high-resistivity specifications. By wafer size, they cover 6-inch, 8-inch and 12-inch etch tools, with 12-inch products representing the mainstream demand for advanced logic, advanced memory and 300 mm fab expansion. By chamber application, they are used in dielectric etch, conductor etch, silicon etch, high-aspect-ratio 3D NAND etch, DRAM etch, advanced logic edge control and certain front-end-related etch steps in advanced packaging. Manufacturing is not limited to ring cutting and CNC machining; it also requires control over material purity, crystal orientation, resistivity, inner and outer diameter tolerances, thickness uniformity, flatness, edge profile, surface condition, particle control and clean packaging. Hana Materials’ public specifications show silicon rings made from single-crystal and multi-crystal silicon, with 240–580 mm outer diameters, low/mid/high resistivity options, polishing/lapping/grinding surface conditions, flatness below 10 μm, machining precision below 15 μm, and requirements for no chipping, scratching, cracking, contamination or staining. DSTC also states that its silicon rings can be produced from single- or multi-crystalline silicon ingot materials with outer diameters up to 650 mm and customized crystal orientation, conductive type, doping, resistivity and thickness.
