The global Tubular Membrane Module (Inside Out) market size was US$ 482 million in 2025 and is forecast to reach a readjusted size of US$ 682 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 5.1% during the forecast period 2026-2032.
An tubular membrane module (inside out) is a type of membrane separation equipment that utilizes tubular membranes as the core filtration unit and operates via a flow pattern where permeation occurs from the inside of the membrane tube to the outside. These modules are typically assembled from multiple hollow tubular membrane elements connected in parallel or series. Feed liquid enters the interior of the membrane tubes; driven by pressure, water molecules or target small molecules permeate through the membrane layer to the outside, while suspended solids, macromolecular organics, colloids, microorganisms, and other rejected substances remain in the concentrate within the tubes, thereby achieving solid-liquid separation, concentration, and purification. In 2025, the global sales volume of tubular membrane modules (inside out) reached 205,000 units, with a production capacity of approximately 350,000 units; the average selling price was $2,350 per unit, and the average gross profit margin ranged from 30% to 40%.
The core structure of an tubular membrane module (inside out) typically comprises a tubular support layer, a filtration membrane layer, a housing, inlet/outlet ports, and sealing components. Compared to outside-in tubular membrane modules, the inside-out configuration is characterized by the feed liquid flowing through the interior of the membrane tubes, causing contaminants to accumulate initially on the inner surface. This facilitates the mitigation of membrane fouling through high-speed cross-flow, hydraulic flushing, or chemical cleaning, making it particularly suitable for complex water treatment scenarios involving high turbidity, high suspended solids content, high viscosity, or oily wastewater.
Technological development for tubular membrane modules (inside out) focuses primarily on enhancing membrane flux, mitigating fouling, extending service life, and improving adaptability to complex operating conditions. Current market technologies center on organic and ceramic tubular membranes; organic membranes—such as PVDF and PES—are widely used in industrial wastewater treatment due to their cost-effectiveness, whereas ceramic membranes—made of materials like alumina and zirconia—are increasingly penetrating high-value industrial separation sectors thanks to their resistance to high temperatures, acids, and alkalis, as well as their ability to withstand repeated cleaning. Future technological trends include the development of high-performance ceramic membrane materials, composite membrane structural design, module modularization, high-flux operation, and intelligent online monitoring. Furthermore, driven by the growth of the new energy industry, the development of novel, highly selective membrane technologies for the recovery of resources such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt will emerge as a key area of research and development.

Tubular Membrane Modules are very commonly used in Membrane Filtration Process. Membrane filtration involves Octarating a single flow into two streams, one more concentrated than the other, by using pressure to selectively pass material through a semi-permeable physical barrier — a membrane. The Octarate streams can then either undergo further processing, or, in the case of a waste stream, be diverted to an appropriate outlet.
