Ethylene Carbonate (usually shortened to EC) is a cyclic carbonate solvent with the formula C₃H₄O₃ (often written as (CH₂O)₂CO). In simple words, it is a small organic molecule that behaves like a high-polarity solvent. At room temperature it is often a colorless, almost odorless crystalline solid, and it melts around the mid-30 °C range into a colorless liquid. Public chemical references describe it as a colorless liquid or crystalline solid and identify it with CAS 96-49-1. Because EC is polar, it can dissolve many salts and polar compounds. That one property—high polarity—explains a lot of why EC is valuable: it is a strong solvent for ions, which is exactly what you want in electrolytes and some specialty formulations.

From a market-definition point of view, the Ethylene Carbonate market includes EC sold as a chemical product across different purity levels and use cases. The market is usually split by grade, because different uses require very different impurity control. For example, “battery grade” EC is sold with extremely tight impurity limits such as very low water and low acid content. In contrast, industrial uses like solvent blends or plasticizer-type roles can tolerate higher impurity levels, so industrial grade can have looser specs and different packaging.

On the supply side, EC is most commonly produced by reacting ethylene oxide (EO) with carbon dioxide (CO₂) to form the cyclic carbonate ring. This route is widely described in technical literature and patents: EO + CO₂ → EC, usually with a catalyst. This production pathway is often discussed as “atom-efficient” because both main reactants end up in the product molecule rather than creating large byproduct streams, and it is also frequently discussed under the broader theme of CO₂ utilization (using CO₂ as a feedstock). In practical industrial terms, however, the true cost and scale depend less on the chemistry idea and more on real factors like EO availability, plant safety management (EO is hazardous), catalyst lifetime, purification needs, energy for distillation, and the ability to meet tight impurity specs for battery customers.

In 2025, global Ethylene Carbonate (EC) production reached approximately 286.3 K MT, with an average global market price of around US$ 1429 per MT. The global single-line production capacity ranges from 10 to 20 K MT per year. The industry's gross profit margin is approximately 25%-35%.

Because batteries are the largest growth engine, the EC market trend is closely linked to EV and energy-storage expansion, plus the general growth of lithium-ion cells used in consumer electronics and power tools. For example, government and academic publications discuss EC’s role and also its susceptibility to certain decomposition pathways under demanding conditions, motivating new electrolyte designs. This does not automatically mean EC demand collapses—rather, it means the market is splitting into more segments. Many cells still use EC heavily, while some next-generation formulations may reduce EC content or pair it with additives (like fluorinated carbonates) to tune interphase behavior. In practical market terms, this creates both risk and opportunity: established EC suppliers can defend volume by meeting performance requirements and developing higher-purity grades, while innovators may capture value by supporting new electrolyte formulations that need different carbonate blends.

Beyond batteries, EC has a second set of demand drivers that matter for the “baseline” market. EC is used as a high-polarity solvent and also shows up as a functional additive in some formulations. Chemical suppliers commonly describe EC use in areas such as plasticizer roles and organic synthesis contexts, reflecting that EC is not only a battery solvent but also a versatile specialty solvent/intermediate. In lubricants and coatings, highly polar solvents can help with solubility and formulation stability, and in synthesis EC can act as a reactive carbonate source in certain transformations. Even if these non-battery uses are smaller than battery demand in growth terms, they provide a stabilizing base for EC consumption and can become more important when battery cycles soften.
