A blackbody radiation source is a dedicated radiation reference light source or heat source device used to approximate an "ideal blackbody." It achieves this by heating a cavity or surface to a stable, controllable temperature, causing it to emit electromagnetic radiation with a definite spectral distribution and radiance according to Planck's law at that temperature. From the demand side, blackbody radiation sources are "small but essential" basic metrology and calibration equipment.
