The global Biosolids market was valued at US$ 8266 million in 2025 and is anticipated to reach US$ 11130 million by 2032, at a CAGR of 4.4% from 2026 to 2032.
Biosolids are solid or semi-solid materials produced when sewage sludge generated during municipal wastewater treatment is subjected to digestion, stabilization, dewatering, sanitation, composting, drying, or other treatment processes. Qualified biosolids must comply with applicable requirements for pathogens, heavy metals, volatile solids, and other contaminants and may be used in agricultural fertilization, landscaping, land reclamation, compost production, energy recovery, and other beneficial applications. This report excludes untreated sewage sludge, hazardous industrial sludge, and general wastewater treatment equipment and measures production on a dry-solids-equivalent basis. In 2025, global Biosolids production reached approximately 34,280 K Dry MT.
Population growth, expansion of sewage collection systems, and higher wastewater treatment coverage are continuously increasing global sludge generation. Large quantities of sludge were historically landfilled or disposed of directly, but limited landfill capacity, rising disposal costs, and circular economy policies are encouraging water utilities to convert sludge into usable biosolids. Biosolids contain organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, and various micronutrients, allowing them to partially replace manufactured fertilizers while improving soil structure, water retention, and organic carbon content. Agricultural land application, land reclamation, landscaping, and compost production will therefore remain major sources of market growth.
Stricter regulatory standards and contaminant-control requirements are driving the adoption of more advanced biosolids treatment technologies. Conventional dewatered cake is increasingly being supplemented by enhanced digestion, thermal hydrolysis, low-temperature drying, pelletization, pyrolysis, and biochar production to reduce pathogens, odors, transportation costs, and long-term environmental risks. Fertilizer price volatility, renewable energy demand, and wastewater utility decarbonization targets are also supporting anaerobic digestion, biomethane generation, phosphorus recovery, and biosolids-derived materials. Regulatory pressure associated with PFAS, microplastics, and pharmaceutical residues will increase demand for testing, traceability, and high-temperature treatment, accelerating the transition from low-cost disposal toward higher-value resource recovery.
