In 2025, global povidone-Iodine production reached approximately 8085 tons, the average price is 30 usd/kg. Povidone-Iodine is a stable chemical complex of Polyvinylpyrrolidone (Povidone, PVP) and elemental Iodine (I). It contains from 9.0% to 12.0% available iodine.

Manufacturing Process and Market Trends:
The core of the povidone-iodine process is the complexation reaction of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) with elemental iodine. The mainstream methods follow three traditional approaches: solvent extraction, solid-phase grinding, and solid-phase heating. Solvent extraction, with its high free iodine content (up to 35%), is being phased out. Solid-phase grinding requires corrosion-resistant ball mills, resulting in heavy investment. Solid-phase heating is time-consuming (three to five days) and damages PVP quality. Newer's gas-solid sublimation method vaporizes iodine at room temperature, penetrating the center of the PVP aggregate structure. Within three hours, the free iodine content is reduced to 4%, while the complexed iodine content increases to 96%. Iodine consumption is reduced from 0.24 to 0.14, representing the current true pinnacle of process iteration. The PVP molecular weight is locked at K30. Iodine is sourced from mines in Chile and Japan. The effective iodine content of the finished product is within the range of 9% to 12% according to the USP, EP, and CP pharmacopoeia. Downstream applications include 5% to 10% povidone-iodine solution for preoperative handwashing, wound cleaning, mucosal application, veterinary medicine, and aquatic seedling soaking.
The global market is dominated by three oligopolies: BASF, Ashland, and New Open Source. Europe holds a 35% share of the market. China's production capacity is being squeezed out of the export market through new gas-solid technology. Medical disinfection is the core business, but growth is slow. Livestock, aquaculture, dairy cows, teats, avian influenza, foot-and-mouth disease, and Southeast Asian aquaculture are the areas with the largest volume growth. Daily chemical products such as lipsticks and shampoos with antibacterial functions are the direction for upgrading. Veterinary low-end hair products are priced higher than human high-end hair products. There is also a differentiated line of eye care products with narrow distribution PVP for mucous membranes.
