Copper paste is a printable or dispensable functional material in which copper particles serve as the principal conductive or thermally conductive phase and are uniformly dispersed in an organic or inorganic vehicle. A typical formulation contains copper powder, binders, solvents and functional additives, and may also contain glass frit, metal-organic compounds or sintering aids. After screen printing, stencil printing, dispensing or another deposition process, the paste is dried and subsequently cured, sintered or fired to form an electrically conductive electrode, circuit, via, interconnection or bonding layer. Depending on the formulation and application, the conductive structure may be formed through polymer curing, metallic particle sintering or high-temperature inorganic bonding.
Copper provides high electrical and thermal conductivity while offering a lower raw-material cost than precious-metal conductors. Its principal technical limitation is susceptibility to oxidation, particularly during high-temperature processing. Consequently, conventional fired copper pastes are generally processed in nitrogen, reducing or another non-oxidizing atmosphere, although specially protected or polymer-curing formulations can be processed at lower temperatures
In 2025, global sales of copper paste reached approximately 890 tons, with an average global market price of around US$ 432/kg. Production capacity varies significantly among manufacturers, with gross profit margins ranging from approximately 10% to 40%.
The copper paste market is benefiting from the miniaturization of electronic components, higher-density interconnection and continued efforts to reduce conductive-material costs. Copper combines good electrical and thermal conductivity with a competitive material cost and has established applications in multilayer ceramic capacitor terminations, low-temperature co-fired ceramic conductors, post-fired thick-film circuits on ceramic substrates and other passive-component electrodes. Continued development in automotive electronics, communication equipment, industrial control systems and high-reliability electronic modules is supporting demand for copper pastes with low resistance, strong adhesion and fine-line printability. Selective substitution of silver-based conductive materials also represents an important growth driver, particularly in applications where processing conditions permit the use of copper and material cost is a major consideration.
Power electronics and advanced packaging are emerging as important incremental markets. Copper sinter pastes can be used for power-semiconductor die attachment, substrate bonding and module interconnection, forming metallic joining layers with high thermal conductivity and current-carrying capability. In selected applications, these materials may reduce dependence on silver sintering systems. Thick-copper printing can also form conductive tracks or thick copper layers on alumina, aluminum nitride and silicon nitride substrates, supporting both electrical conduction and thermal management in power modules. Advances in low-temperature curing, low-temperature sintering and air-processable formulations are further extending copper paste into flexible electronics, sensors, heating elements and electromagnetic shielding.
The susceptibility of copper to oxidation remains the principal constraint on broader adoption. Conventional firing-type products generally require nitrogen, reducing atmospheres or tightly controlled low-oxygen conditions, increasing requirements for equipment, firing profiles and substrate compatibility. Low-temperature and polymer-curing products must balance conductivity, adhesion, heat resistance, storage stability and formulation cost. Customer requirements also differ substantially in terms of copper-particle size, morphology, surface treatment, paste rheology and long-term reliability, resulting in relatively lengthy product-development and qualification cycles. Future competition will increasingly focus on oxidation resistance, low-temperature metallization, fine-line printing, thick-copper deposition, power-device bonding and application-specific formulations. Suppliers combining powder control, paste formulation and collaborative customer validation are likely to hold stronger competitive positions.
