The ship plate is a hot rolled steel sheet produced to manufacture hull structures as required by the code of conduct. In the 1870s carbon was added to molten iron to make steel. Iron and steel were soon being used in ship production. These irons and steels were known as ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) iron and steel. They constitute specific types of iron and steel utilized to build ships. How they are manufactured and used is regulated by the ABS standardized grading and specification system.

As the global shipping industry moves towards large-scale, high-efficiency and low-carbonization, ship plates, as the core raw materials for shipbuilding, are becoming an important direction of the marine materials industry chain through technical upgrading and structural optimization. Ship plates are mainly divided into ordinary strength ship plates (such as A, B, D grades) and high-strength ship plates (such as AH32, DH36, EH40, etc.). The former are mostly used for offshore ships and small structural parts, while the latter are widely used in key load-bearing parts of the hull such as medium and large tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, chemical tankers, etc. to meet higher strength and corrosion resistance requirements. In recent years, with the rise of new green ship types such as LNG ships and dual-fuel ships, more stringent standards have been proposed for ship plates, such as low-temperature impact toughness, hydrogen embrittlement resistance, high strength-to-toughness ratio and welding adaptability.

The major global ship plate manufacturers include POSCO, JFE Steel, NSSMC, Baostee, Valin Xiangtan Steel, etc. The top five global manufacturers account for about 50% of the market share. Asia Pacific is the world's largest ship plate market, accounting for about 80% of the market share, followed by Europe and North America, which together account for about 10% of the market share.
