Paint driers are metal-based additives used in oxidatively drying paints, coatings, varnishes, stains, and certain printing inks to accelerate surface drying, through drying, film hardness development, and final cure in alkyd, natural oil, and oxidative hybrid binder systems.  Alkyd and oil-modified coatings can dry too slowly under ambient conditions without catalytic metal carboxylates or related metal-organic complexes.

The upstream supply chain of paint driers is built around cobalt, manganese, iron, zirconium, calcium, zinc, barium, strontium, cerium, neodecanoate, 2-ethylhexanoate, naphthenate, hydrocarbon solvents, oxygenated solvents, water-dispersible carriers, and formulation stabilizers. Supply of paint driers is technically specialized, with value concentrated in metal purity control, metal content consistency, low-color formulations, cobalt-free catalysis, solvent selection, regulatory documentation, and compatibility testing in alkyd systems. Downstream buyers are paint manufacturers, industrial coating formulators, wood coating producers, protective coating suppliers, marine coating formulators, and ink makers. Procurement is usually conducted through annual framework agreements, approved supplier lists, formulation lock-in, regional distributors, and repeat orders in drums, IBCs, or bulk liquid shipments.
