Truck rear hydraulic retarder is an advanced auxiliary braking system installed at the end of the vehicle transmission system, mainly used in large commercial vehicles such as heavy trucks and buses. It uses hydraulic resistance to slow down, thereby reducing the burden on the main braking system, extending the service life of brake pads and tires, and improving driving safety. When the driver activates the retarder, hydraulic oil is pumped into one or more working chambers, forcing relative movement between the rotor and the stator. The friction generated is converted into heat energy and dissipated, thereby achieving vehicle deceleration.

Hydraulic retarders reduce temperature rise and brake fade caused by continuous operation of friction brakes, extending the life of brake pads and discs and reducing maintenance downtime risks. Therefore, their procurement value is particularly prominent in mountainous trunk logistics, hazardous materials transportation, engineering transportation, and high-attendance fleets. Both Driventic and ZF highlight reduced service brake wear, improved downhill speed control, and lower maintenance costs as core product values. Ford Trucks' continued use of Driventic retarders in its F-LINE and F-MAX models also indicates a sustained demand for retarders in the mature heavy-duty truck market.

Product form will evolve from independent mechanical assemblies to deep integration with the powertrain. The next generation of retarders needs to coordinate with AMT, EBS, cruise control, gradient detection, and vehicle controllers to automatically distribute braking force between the hydraulic retarder and the service brakes based on vehicle speed, load, and braking requirements. ZF Intarder has been integrated into transmissions such as TraXon, and Driventic products also use mechatronic control units; Shaanxi Fast Auto Drive Group has incorporated the FHB400K retarder into its electric drive system product portfolio, reflecting that Chinese suppliers are upgrading from single-unit supply to joint development of transmissions, electric drive axles and vehicle control systems.
