Imazapyr is a systemic, non-selective herbicide widely used in agriculture, forestry, and land management to control a broad spectrum of weeds, woody plants, and grasses. Chemically classified as an imidazolinone, it has the molecular formula C13H15N3O3 and is known for its effectiveness at low application rates. Imazapyr is valued for its broad-spectrum activity and long-lasting soil residual effects, making it a preferred choice for managing invasive species and maintaining areas free of undesirable vegetation.

Imazapyr works by inhibiting the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS), also known as acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS). ALS is crucial in plants for synthesizing branched-chain amino acids such as isoleucine, leucine, and valine. When imazapyr disrupts this enzyme, the target plants experience halted growth and eventual death due to amino acid deficiency. Because animals do not possess ALS, imazapyr is considered relatively low in toxicity to mammals and other non-target organisms when used according to label directions.

One of the key benefits of imazapyr is its persistence in the soil, allowing long-term control of unwanted vegetation. It is also effective at low doses, reducing the quantity of chemical needed per application. Moreover, imazapyr demonstrates minimal leaching potential in certain soil types, which reduces the likelihood of groundwater contamination under appropriate usage.

Despite its advantages, imazapyr has notable environmental considerations. It is highly mobile in the environment, especially in sandy soils, and can potentially affect non-target plants through root uptake or drift during application. To minimize unintended harm, careful adherence to buffer zones and application guidelines is essential.

Imazapyr is an organic heterocyclic herbicide developed by the American Cyanamid Company. It is a lethal herbicide. Its isopropylamine salt can be used before or after germination. It can be quickly absorbed by the roots and leaves of cultivated weeds, inhibiting the biosynthesis of the side chain amino acids of cultivated weeds, preventing the growth of weeds and causing them to die. The control targets include all weeds, and it has good weed control activity against sedge weeds, annual and perennial monocotyledonous weeds, broad-leaved weeds and miscellaneous woods. It is suitable for non-cultivated land as well as rubber plantations, oil palm, forests and tea gardens.
