Ultra-thin lenses, as the name suggests, are lighter, thinner, and more comfortable eyeglass lenses. Ultra-thin lenses are made of high refractive index materials. Under the same degree, the higher the refractive index, the thinner the lens will be. Using materials with a high refractive index can reduce the curvature of the lens to obtain a concave lens with the same power but thinner edges or a convex lens with a thinner center. Unlike traditional lenses, high-refractive-index lenses increase the refractive index by changing the molecular structure of the material. As the refractive index increases, the weight of the lens does not necessarily increase, and some even decrease.

Although the ultra-thin lens feels thinner, it also has a reduced lens dispersion coefficient (the dispersion coefficient of the ordinary lens is 58, and the refractive index of the high-refraction lens is reduced to below 40), and the degree of dispersion increases, which causes the lens to be seen around the lens. The visual clarity of things is reduced and the boundary is not clear. That is to say, the ultra-thin lens will be thinner than the ordinary lens; in terms of clarity, the periphery of the former will be worse; if a glass lens is used, the former will be heavier. There are pros and cons to using ultra-thin lenses. From the normative approach, it is advisable to use ordinary refractive index lenses below 400 degrees, and ultra-thin lenses can be considered for more than 400 degrees, but it is not suitable to choose 1.74 refractive index lenses for temperatures less than 1000 degrees. In 2022, the number of myopic people in China will reach more than 700 million, and the incidence of myopia among Chinese teenagers has surpassed that of other countries, driving the development of the ultra-thin lens industry.
