Ventricular drainage equipment is a type of medical equipment used for timely extra-ventricular drainage of the brain, monitoring and management of intracranial pressure changes, and removal of blood in the ventricle, which can effectively solve the increase in intracranial pressure.
Increasing prevalence of hydrocephalus is one of the major drivers for the growth of the global external ventricular drainage market. Hydrocephalus is an atypical buildup of fluid in the ventricles (cavities) deep in the brain. This excess fluid can cause the ventricles to enlarge, putting pressure on the brain tissue. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a clear, colorless fluid that protects and cushions the spine and brain. Normally, cerebrospinal fluid flows through the ventricles and flushes the spinal cord and brain before being absorbed by the bloodstream. The body produces enough CSF and consumes the same amount every day. However, CSF pooling may result when the normal flow or assimilation of CSF is disturbed. The pressure created by excess cerebrospinal fluid can inhibit the normal functioning of the brain, leading to brain damage and even death. Some of these conditions are associated with elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) or intracranial pressure greater than 20 mmHg due to obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) outflow. External Ventricular Drainage (EVD) is one of the most commonly performed neurosurgery procedures: more than 25,000 EVDs are inserted each year in the US alone.
