The global Linear Alpha-Olefin market is projected to grow from US$ 10685 million in 2024 to US$ 15173 million by 2031, at a CAGR of 4.9% (2025-2031), driven by critical product segments and diverse end‑use applications, while evolving U.S. tariff policies introduce trade‑cost volatility and supply‑chain uncertainty.
Linear alpha-olefin (LAO) refers to a straight chain monoolefin with a double bond located at the end of the molecular chain, commonly used in fields such as polyethylene, lubricants, detergents, and oilfield chemicals. Among them, polyethylene is the largest downstream application of alpha olefins. When alpha olefins are used as comonomers for HDPE, their average content is 1% -2%; When producing LLDPE copolymer monomers, the average content is 8% -10%; When used for POE, the alpha olefin content is between 20% and 30%. When producing HDPE or LLDPE, the addition of 1-hexene can significantly improve the branching degree of PE. The crystallinity, melting point, and density of the copolymer are low, and the flexibility and tear resistance are good. Compared with LLDPE produced by 1-butene copolymerization, LLDPE produced by 1-hexene copolymerization has significantly better tensile strength, impact strength, tear resistance, and durability. It can be used as a high-end specialized PE resin to produce LLDPE with high toughness, high strength, and thinner thickness; For POE, ethylene/1-octene copolymer elastomer has the best performance. In 2024, global Linear Alpha-Olefin production reached approximately 6,916 K MT, with an average global market price of around US$ 1,545 per MT.
The upstream of linear alpha olefins mainly consists of ethylene obtained from the cracking of light hydrocarbons such as naphtha, ethane, and propane, as well as oligomerization catalysts, solvents, and a large number of utilities. Therefore, the raw material end is highly dependent on large-scale integrated refining and chemical units; The downstream end serves as a copolymer monomer of polyethylene and elastomers (1-butene, 1-hexene, 1-octene) entering resin systems such as LLDPE and HDPE, while the other end mainly uses C10-C14 for oxidation to produce fatty alcohols, surfactants, and detergent raw materials. High carbon LAO also enters the fields of PAO synthesis lubricant base oil, oilfield chemicals, and specialty additives. In terms of cost structure, ethylene and other olefin raw materials usually account for about 60% of the total cost, while energy and utilities (steam, electricity, cooling water), catalyst and solvent consumption, equipment depreciation, and labor manufacturing expenses account for about 20-25%. The rest are environmental protection, safety, management, and sales expenses. Therefore, the overall gross profit margin is highly dependent on the price difference of ethylene raw materials and equipment load: for large enterprises with high integration and good load rate, the typical gross profit margin of linear alpha olefin business is roughly in the range of 15-25%, and independent or raw material disadvantaged enterprises may compress their gross profit margin to about 10-15% in the low prosperity stage of the industry.
POE refers to a random copolymer elastomer of ethylene and alpha olefins (1-butene, 1-hexene, 1-octene, etc.). Generally, POE mainly refers to ethylene/alpha olefin copolymer elastomers with a mass fraction of alpha olefins greater than 20%.
Ethylene/1-octene copolymer elastomers have the best performance in industrial applications, with octene content typically ranging from 20% to 30% and crystallinity less than 25%. In POE, as the content of comonomers increases, the density, hardness, and melting temperature of the polymer decrease, and the heat resistance decreases.
Thanks to the rapid development of TOPCon for photovoltaic cells, the advantages of POE mainly lie in its good material properties, excellent anti PID performance, high electrical resistivity, high water vapor barrier rate, low temperature and yellowing resistance, and better compatibility with N-type TOPCon. Major N-type module companies have explored or introduced pure POE film or POE containing film as packaging materials earlier, and the demand for POE is expected to increase rapidly.
After years of development, wax cracking method, high carbon alcohol dehydrogenation, Fischer Tropsch synthesis, mixed C4 separation method, and ethylene oligomerization method have become the main processes for producing alpha olefins in the world, among which ethylene oligomerization method is the most widely used.
Ethylene oligomerization is a process that uses ethylene as raw material and undergoes oligomerization reaction under the action of catalyst to prepare alpha olefins. It is the most mainstream process route for alpha olefins worldwide, accounting for more than 95% of the total LAO production. Industrial production is divided into two categories:
1. Non selective oligomerization: This process has poor selectivity for specific products, resulting in a fully distributed ethylene oligomer with even numbered carbon LAO ranging from C4 to C30+. Multiple components exhibit a normal distribution, and further separation to obtain high-purity alpha olefins requires significant energy consumption.
2. Selective oligomerization: The product obtained by this process is one or several ethylene oligomers, and the purity of 1-hexene obtained by Phillips ethylene selective trimerization process is as high as 90%.
