Tiopronin API is a glycine derivative containing a free thiol group. Its chemical name is N-(2-mercaptopropionyl)glycine, its molecular formula is C₅H₉NO₃S, its molecular weight is 163.19500, and its appearance is a white crystalline powder with a sulfur odor. The substance is easily soluble in water or ethanol, very slightly soluble in chloroform or ether, and easily soluble in dilute alkaline solutions, with a melting point of 95-97°C. Its core pharmacological action is based on the thiol active group. It exerts a detoxification function by chelating with harmful substances, and can protect liver cells and reduce the toxic side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. It is mainly used clinically to improve liver function of liver diseases such as acute and chronic hepatitis, fatty liver, and alcoholic liver. It also has significant therapeutic effects on diseases such as heavy metal poisoning, senile cataracts, and vitreous opacities.
Tiopronin API participates in the liver protection mechanism by providing thiol groups, which can inhibit liver damage caused by chemicals such as carbon tetrachloride and ethionine, and reduce the accumulation of triglycerides in chronic liver damage. The thiol group in its molecule can also reversibly bind to free radicals, remove excess free radicals in the body, and thus reduce the damage to cells caused by oxidative stress. The API is made into oral tablets, enteric-coated tablets, injections and other dosage forms. When used clinically, it is necessary to strictly follow the scope of indications and avoid using it in special groups such as those who are allergic to the product, pregnant women, lactating women, children, and patients with acute severe lead and mercury poisoning.
