The global Lithium Supplement market is projected to grow from US$ 30.8 million in 2024 to US$ 23094 million by 2031, at a CAGR of 154.0% (2025-2031), driven by critical product segments and diverse end‑use applications, while evolving U.S. tariff policies introduce trade‑cost volatility and supply‑chain uncertainty.
Lithium supplement can optimize the initial coulombic efficiency and cycle life of batteries. During the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on the anode surface, a certain amount of active lithium from the cathode is irreversibly consumed, leading to low first-cycle efficiency and poor cycle life. Lithium supplements effectively pre-lithiate the electrode materials, compensating for lithium loss during the first cycle to improve both initial efficiency and lifespan. This technology will promote the industrialization of silicon-carbon anodes, further enhancing battery energy density and extending cycle life. During the formation process of lithium-ion batteries, the growth of the SEI layer on the anode surface consumes active lithium, resulting in energy loss. Currently, the irreversible capacity loss of widely used graphite anodes exceeds 6%, while silicon-based anodes experience irreversible capacity losses as high as 10% to over 20%, limiting the full advantage of the high specific capacity of silicon-carbon systems. Lithium supplement technology compensates for this active lithium loss, addressing the low first-cycle efficiency drawback of silicon-carbon anodes and fully leveraging their high capacity benefits.
Currently, lithium supplementation methods are divided into two types: anode lithium supplementation and cathode lithium supplementation. Anode lithium supplementation includes approaches such as lithium foil supplementation, lithium powder supplementation, lithiated silicon powder supplementation, and electrolyte lithium salt aqueous solution supplementation. However, anode lithium supplementation still faces significant challenges related to battery manufacturing processes: incompatibility of metallic lithium with production environments, conventional solvents, binders, and heat treatment procedures make the path for anode lithium supplementation difficult and full of obstacles. As an alternative technical route, many lithium supplementation additives targeting cathode materials have entered the research scope. Compared to the complex and high-investment anode supplementation, cathode lithium supplementation is much simpler: typically, a small amount of high-capacity material is added during the cathode slurry mixing process; during charging, Li⁺ ions are released from the high-capacity material to compensate for the irreversible capacity loss during the first charge-discharge cycle. Cathode lithium supplementation has the greatest industrial application potential due to its high safety and the fact that it does not require changes to existing battery manufacturing processes. Currently, the main materials used as cathode lithium supplementation additives include lithium-rich compounds, conversion reaction-based nanocomposites, and binary lithium compounds.
