The global Ammonia Decomposition Hydrogen Production Technology market is projected to grow from US$ million in 2024 to US$ million by 2031, at a CAGR of %(2025-2031), driven by critical product segments and diverse end‑use applications.
Ammonia decomposition hydrogen production technology is a technology that uses ammonia (NH₃) as a hydrogen carrier to efficiently release hydrogen (H₂) through catalytic cracking reactions. Due to the advantages of ammonia such as high hydrogen density (17.6 wt%), easy liquefaction (0.8 MPa can be liquefied at room temperature), and low storage and transportation costs, this technology is regarded as one of the important ways to solve the problem of hydrogen energy storage and transportation, especially in long-distance transportation and distributed hydrogen supply scenarios.
Carbon neutrality commitments of various countries (such as China 2060 and EU 2050) drive the demand for clean hydrogen energy. Ammonia (NH₃) is a carbon-free hydrogen carrier. After cracking, it only releases nitrogen and water, which meets the zero emission requirements. Ammonia can be used as an energy storage medium for intermittent wind and solar power generation, and long-term energy storage and cross-regional transportation can be achieved through "green electricity to green ammonia → ammonia cracking to supply hydrogen".
Hydrogen liquefaction requires ultra-low temperature of -253℃ or high pressure (70MPa), which is costly and dangerous; ammonia storage and transportation conditions are milder (-33℃ or 1MPa), and the infrastructure (such as liquid ammonia tankers and ports) is mature. The energy density of ammonia (12.7 MJ/L) is higher than that of liquid hydrogen (8.5 MJ/L), the hydrogen storage capacity per unit volume is higher, and the long-distance transportation cost is 30%-50% lower than that of hydrogen.
High-temperature fuel cells (such as SOFC) can directly use ammonia cracking gas to generate electricity, improve system efficiency; combined with chemical by-product hydrogen purification technology, reduce raw material costs. Miniaturized cracking units promote distributed applications (such as on-site hydrogen production at hydrogen refueling stations).
