In traditional electric vehicle battery coating, PET "blue film" was once the mainstream choice. However, with the rapid development of new energy vehicle technology, the limitations of blue film have gradually emerged. Although blue film has certain insulation properties, its wear resistance and anti-puncture performance can no longer meet the needs in high-voltage, high-energy density battery systems. Recently, many new energy giants led by BMW, CATL, and BYD have begun to turn to a new UV insulation coating solution, triggering a new round of upgrades in power battery insulation solutions. UV coatings not only have a fast curing speed, but also can form a high-performance protective film. They are widely used in many fields, especially in the insulation protection of new energy batteries. The UV spraying process has no VOCs volatiles, does not contain solvents, and has good insulation, adhesion, low flammability, and high durability after curing. Compared with blue film, UV spraying can realize a fully automatic production line, quickly complete the spraying and curing of the product, do not require baking equipment, have a simple process, and have a high comprehensive coating efficiency; it can be seamlessly connected to the battery, while having the advantages of excellent insulation performance and safety and environmental protection. The most significant contrast is that the blue film pass rate and production efficiency are relatively low, with the current highest efficiency being only 6PPM, while the UV coating pass rate and production efficiency are higher, with the battery cell UV coating currently reaching 60PPM. The significant improvement in production efficiency can significantly save costs.
The advantages of the UV insulation coating solution compared to other solutions are: 1. Short curing time and high production efficiency. According to the data of the glue I choose public account, PET insulation film does not need to be cured, while the UV insulation coating curing time is only 0.1 minutes, which is much shorter than the curing time of 10 to 30 minutes required for heating of powder coating and epoxy coating. 2. High bonding strength. The failure mode of UV insulation coating is the cohesive failure of the coating itself, that is, the bonding force between the coating and the structural adhesive and the battery shell is greater than the cohesive force of the coating itself. 3. More uniform coverage. The UV insulation coating has an extremely short curing time, and the solid particles can be directly and evenly fixed on the surface of the power battery, without the problem of vertical flow. UV insulating coating not only makes up for the shortcomings of "blue film", but also outperforms powder coating and epoxy coating in other key performance aspects. It is a "pentagonal warrior" without obvious shortcomings and is a feasible solution to replace PET blue film.
