PET film, also known as polyester film, has excellent mechanical properties. PET film is a functional film with excellent mechanical properties, including high toughness, tensile strength and impact strength. PET film can be divided into BOPET film and CPET film according to different production processes. BOPET film is widely used in different fields due to its excellent performance, mainly including printing and packaging, liquid crystal display, new energy, semiconductor lighting and other fields. High-end BOPET film is the core material for clean energy, 5G communication technology, new energy vehicles, new display technology, energy-saving and emission reduction technology, and plays an important role in the development of the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence in the future. BOPET film mainly adopts two production processes: direct melting method and slicing method. The direct melting method directly pipes the polyester melt to the film production line, reducing the process of converting the melt into solid slices, so it has certain cost advantages, but the production line flexibility is not high, so it is more used to produce products with simple structure and low functional requirements. The slicing method is to set the raw material ratio according to different products, form slices through esterification and polycondensation reaction, and then carry out subsequent process operations on the extruder. It is more flexible, so the slicing method is more used to produce high-performance, differentiated, and special-structured products.
The upstream of BOPET film is raw materials such as PTA and ethylene glycol, and the downstream applications are wide. BOPET film is located in the middle of the industrial chain, and the upstream raw materials mainly include PTA and ethylene glycol. Among them, the demand in the packaging and printing field accounts for a large proportion, which is 55.45%, followed by other industries and electronic and electrical fields, with demand accounting for 28.47% and 15.31% respectively. China has sufficient production capacity for low-end BOPET films, and high-end BOPET films are highly dependent on imports. In 2021, China's BOPET production capacity and output were 4.4315 million tons and 3.0103 million tons respectively, and the capacity utilization rate was only 67.9%. At present, China's high-end BOPET film market is monopolized by companies such as Japan's Toray, Mitsubishi, Toyobo, the United States' 3M and South Korea's SKC. In 2021, China's BOPET imports were 65,300 tons, with an import unit price of US$11,093.07 per ton; exports were 443,400 tons, with an export unit price of US$3,051.77 per ton, and the import unit price was about 3.6 times higher than the export unit price. At present, China's BOPET film production capacity is mainly low-end, and high-end products mainly rely on imports.
