Lithium adsorbent resin is a specially designed ion exchange resin that has the ability to selectively adsorb lithium ions (Li+), thereby extracting lithium from salt lake brine containing a variety of metal ions.
Downstream development drives lithium demand growth, and lithium extraction from salt lakes has broad prospects. With the rapid development of new energy vehicles, electronic devices and energy storage technology, the application of lithium in the field of new energy materials has received great attention and is known as the "energy metal of the 21st century" and "white oil". According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), as of 2020, the world's proven lithium reserves are about 86 million tons. In terms of mineral types, global lithium mines are currently divided into two categories: spodumene hard rock mines and salt lake brines, of which salt lake lithium resources account for about 58% and pegmatite resources account for about 26%. Salt lakes have the world's largest lithium resources. However, due to restrictions such as technology and development environment, lithium ore is still the main lithium resource in production. In 2019, the output of lithium salts corresponding to spodumene was 180,000 tons, accounting for 55%; the output of lithium salts corresponding to salt lake brines was 150,000 tons, accounting for 45%. In terms of resource distribution, the total lithium resources in the "Lithium Triangle" region of South America (Chile, Argentina and Bolivia) account for about 58% of the global total, and China's lithium resource reserves are 7 million tons, accounting for about 13% of the global total. High magnesium-to-lithium ratio and low content limit the development of lithium resources in salt lakes. According to the China Geological Survey, China's lithium resources are mainly concentrated in salt lakes, accounting for more than 80%, located in Qinghai, Tibet, Hubei and other regions. Compared with the salt lakes in the "Lithium Triangle" in South America, the magnesium-to-lithium ratio of South American salt lakes is less than 20 and the lithium content is 0.05-0.15%, with good resource endowment; while the magnesium-to-lithium ratio of Chinese salt lakes is generally higher than 60 and the lithium content is only 0.02-0.085%, requiring more advanced technology to solve the separation of magnesium-lithium and lithium-sodium. Since the hydration radius of Mg2+/Li+ hydrated ions is similar, there are many chemical commonalities and it is not easy to separate; if the magnesium-to-lithium ratio is too high, it will result in poor quality of the extracted product and generate a greater demand for adsorbents/membranes. In addition, in downstream battery applications, if there are too many impurity ions in the salt lake, it will affect the stability of battery performance. Therefore, the extraction of lithium from salt lakes has high requirements for extraction technology, materials and processes. At present, the development level of domestic salt lake resources is still relatively low, and the output of lithium from salt lakes is less than 20% of the total national output. New energy vehicles are developing rapidly, and there will still be huge increases in the future. At present, metallic lithium is widely used in new energy industries, traditional industries, 3C electronic digital consumer products and energy storage batteries, among which new energy vehicles and energy storage batteries have a relatively impressive growth rate.
