Egtazic Acid, commonly known as EGTA (ethylene glycol-bis(β-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid), is a polyaminocarboxylic acid chelating agent specifically designed to bind calcium ions (Ca²⁺) with high selectivity over magnesium ions (Mg²⁺). Structurally similar to EDTA but with modified ether linkages, EGTA is widely used in biochemical and physiological research to control calcium concentrations in buffers, making it essential in studies involving calcium-dependent enzymes, signal transduction, and electrophysiology. With a molecular formula of C₁₄H₂₄N₂O₁₀ and a molar mass of 380.35 g/mol, EGTA is typically used as its water-soluble disodium salt and plays a crucial role in maintaining stable calcium levels in cell and tissue experiments.
Egtazic Acid (EGTA) is a white crystalline polyaminocarboxylic acid with the molecular formula C₁₄H₂₄N₂O₁₀ and a molar mass of 380.35 g/mol. It exhibits high selectivity for calcium ions (Ca²⁺) over magnesium ions (Mg²⁺), with stability constants of approximately log K = 10.9 for Ca²⁺ and log K = 5.4 for Mg²⁺. EGTA is slightly soluble in water in its acid form but becomes highly soluble when used as a disodium salt (EGTA-Na₂). Its structure contains multiple carboxylic acid groups (pKa values around 2.0, 2.7, 6.2, and 8.9) and ether linkages that enhance calcium specificity. The compound is thermally stable, decomposing above 300 °C, and should be stored in a cool, dry place to avoid moisture absorption. Low in toxicity, EGTA is widely used in biochemical applications where controlled chelation of calcium is required.
