Trivalent chromium plating is a surface finishing process used to apply a protective and decorative chromium coating to various metal substrates. Unlike traditional hexavalent chromium plating, which has raised environmental and health concerns, trivalent chromium plating utilizes a chromium plating solution containing trivalent chromium ions. This process offers a more environmentally friendly alternative while still providing corrosion resistance, improved hardness, and aesthetic appeal to the plated materials.
As the name implies, trivalent chromium plating no longer uses chromic anhydride containing hexavalent chromium in its process, which complies with the most stringent environmental regulations such as REACH and is a key measure to eliminate hexavalent chromium pollution. A large number of practices have shown that in addition to environmental advantages, trivalent chromium plating has more characteristics in appearance and corrosion resistance: high color adjustability, especially excellent performance in calcium chloride resistance (commonly known as "Russian mud") test.
This process is often used in combination with bright nickel or pearl nickel, which broadens the possibilities of color and appearance design. Its advantages also include excellent corrosion resistance, high electroplating speed and excellent calcium chloride corrosion resistance. Due to its significant environmental characteristics (relative to hexavalent chromium plating), the market demand for trivalent chromium plating continues to grow.
The key to this process is to prevent the oxidation of Cr³⁺ in the bath to toxic Cr⁶⁺. Traditional lead-based alloys or graphite anodes are not suitable due to their high oxygen evolution potential. Titanium anodes with iridium mixed metal oxide coatings can effectively inhibit Cr³⁺ oxidation and ensure the stability of the plating solution due to their low oxygen evolution potential characteristics. At the same time, the excellent conductivity, uniform current distribution and electrolyte corrosion resistance of the titanium anode make it an ideal electrode for trivalent chromium electroplating.
The future market trend of trivalent chromium electroplating is driven by multiple factors: the increasing regulatory attention to reducing the impact of industrial environment is driving the replacement of hexavalent chromium process; the growing demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly surface treatment solutions in industries such as automobiles, aerospace and consumer goods; and the technological progress of the process and materials themselves.
