Technology-wise, three lines are moving fastest: fast-melting/low-viscosity mold flux for HSM/thin-slab casters; low-reactivity, Al-resistant mold flux for high-Al, stainless and IF automotive grades; and fluorine-free or near-free fluxes using B₂O₃/TiO₂/Li₂O systems. The value chain runs from mineral and chemical suppliers (lime, silica, fluorspar, alumina, borax, carbon, lithium) to specialized mold-flux and refractory groups (Vesuvius, Calderys/HWI, Shinagawa, plus a wide Chinese belt of custom flux makers) and finally to steelmakers’ slab/bloom/billet and thin-slab casters.

Recent developments include Vesuvius’ 2024 inauguration of a mould-flux plant in Visakhapatnam, India, and Calderys’ 2025 plan to build a USD 100 million refractory-and-steel-casting-flux hub in Odisha, alongside the consolidation of Calderys India Refractories into the parent, which can be cited as a current, concrete transaction in the segment. The direction of travel is toward faster-casting fluxes, greener/fluorine-free formulations, and more plant-specific, digitally parameterized mold flux recipes.
