3D reconstruction refers to the process of rebuilding the original three-dimensional information from single-view or multi-view images. Its goal is to restore and reconstruct certain 3D objects or scenes so that the resulting models can be easily processed by computers. 3D reconstruction technology is a key computer-based method for representing the objective world, covering various directions such as object reconstruction, scene reconstruction, and dynamic human reconstruction. By acquiring depth data, performing preprocessing, point cloud registration and fusion, and generating surfaces, 3D reconstruction technology portrays real scenes as mathematical models that conform to computer logic. Such models can assist in research areas like cultural heritage preservation, game development, architectural design, and clinical medicine.
Based on technology, 3D reconstruction can be simply divided into three categories: 3D reconstruction software, image/video-based methods, and 3D scanning-based methods.
3D reconstruction software includes representative products such as Pix4Dmapper, Metashape, ReCap Pro, 3D Max, AutoCAD, Maya, RealityCapture, and ContextCapture.
Image-based 3D reconstruction essentially utilizes discrete two-dimensional images of 3D scenes or objects captured by photographic or video devices as the basic data. After processing, these images yield the 3D information of the scene or object to generate a realistic model. An appropriate spatial model then organizes the panoramic images into a virtual real-space environment in which users can move forward, backward, look around, zoom in, or zoom out—thus allowing users to observe the 3D scene from all angles. This modeling technique enables photorealistic graphics rendering on a standard computer. Currently, images and videos used for reconstruction are mainly sourced from cameras, drones, video cameras, sensors, etc.
On a regional level, North America is currently the largest market globally, accounting for approximately 40% of the market share. The Chinese market has changed rapidly in recent years, representing about 17% of the global market in 2024, and it is expected that by 2031, China’s share will reach 25%.
