Against the backdrop of rapidly expanding AI and cloud computing, optical transceivers are evolving from a “supporting component” to a core entry point of next-generation compute infrastructure. Our research indicates that demand for 400G/800G and even 1.6T optical modules for cloud data centers and AI training clusters has been accelerating over the past two years, with the overall market sustaining strong double-digit growth and Ethernet optical modules growing the fastest. As large AI models scale up and GPU clusters become denser, switch port bandwidth upgrades are clearly accelerating, while both the number of optical ports per rack and the line-rate per port are moving up in tandem. As a result, high-speed optical modules are shifting from being just “one part of capex” to becoming a key lever for optimizing cost per unit of compute and energy efficiency in modern data centers.

From a competitive landscape perspective, the global optical module supply system is shifting from being dominated by traditional US/EU/Japan vendors to a dual-engine pattern driven by “international system OEMs + Chinese specialist module manufacturers.” In recent years, particularly in the 400G/800G high-speed segment, leading Chinese optical module vendors have leveraged their complete local supply chain, manufacturing efficiency, and cost advantages to capture a majority of positions in the global top-tier supplier group, forming deep partnerships with global leaders in cloud data centers, telecom backbones, and 5G transport. We believe that as AI clusters move toward higher bandwidth and lower-power architectures (such as LPO, CPO, and silicon photonics solutions), those vendors that combine large-scale manufacturing capability with rapid technology iteration will be best positioned to capture the long-term structural upside from global compute-infrastructure expansion.

From a product and technology-roadmap standpoint, the optical module industry is undergoing a dual inflection of “rate upgrade + architecture reshaping.” The migration from 100G to 400G/800G is clearly accelerating, and the shipment mix in data-center optics is rapidly tilting toward 4×100G, 8×100G, and single-lane 200G solutions. Midstream manufacturers, through high-speed mounting, precision coupling, optoelectronic joint testing, and reliability verification, have completed standardized and customized optical module products ranging from 10G to 800G and even 1.6T, and are supplying downstream server/switch manufacturers, cloud data center operators, telecom operators, and equipment manufacturers on a large scale. Currently, China has formed a strong cost and efficiency advantage in midstream packaging and manufacturing and some upstream components, but still relies on imports for the highest-end DSPs, coherent chips, and some high-performance lasers.
