Titania slag is a by-product of the production of titanium dioxide (TiO2), a white pigment used in various industries, such as paints, plastics, paper, and cosmetics . Titania slag is obtained by smelting ilmenite, a mineral that contains iron and titanium oxides, in an electric furnace . The resulting molten slag is tapped and cooled to form solid crystals of different grades, depending on the TiO2 content . Titania slag is mainly used as a raw material for the manufacture of TiO2 pigment by either the sulfate or the chloride process .

The major factors driving the market growth include the increasing demand for TiO2 pigment in various end-use industries, such as paints and coatings, plastics, paper, and personal care; the rising environmental awareness and regulations that favor the use of chloride process over sulfate process for TiO2 production; and the technological innovations and expansions in titania slag capacity and quality by key players.
