It is generally supplied as white to off-white crystalline powder, flakes or free-flowing pellets, while molten bulk delivery is also used by large continuous-process customers. Its melting point is typically around 79–82°C, and it is soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons and a range of organic solvents while being essentially insoluble in water. The market scope covers industrial-grade TPP only, including high-purity and standard industrial grades, while laboratory reagents, analytical grades, research packs, triphenylphosphine oxide, phosphonium salts and other specialty phosphine derivatives are excluded. Mainstream high-purity industrial products are typically ≥99.5%, with selected grades reaching ≥99.8%. Beyond assay, TPPO content, moisture, chlorides, residual organic compounds, trace metals, color and batch consistency can materially affect catalyst activity, reaction selectivity, conversion, downstream purification and waste-treatment requirements. TPP functions as a Wittig reagent and phosphonium precursor, homogeneous-catalysis ligand, reducing and functional-group conversion reagent, curing-related component and polymer additive, giving qualified suppliers greater value than conventional commodity chemical distributors.
