Potential transformers (PT), are a parallel-connected type of instrument transformer. They are designed to present a negligible load to the supply being measured and have an accurate voltage ratio and phase relationship to enable accurate secondary connected metering. Therefore, the capacity of voltage transformers is very small, generally only a few volt-amperes or tens of volt-amperes, and the maximum does not exceed one thousand volt-amperes. The entry introduces its basic structure, working principle, main types, wiring methods, precautions, abnormalities and handling, and ferromagnetic resonance, etc.

As renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower continue to grow, the demand for voltage transformers (VTs) is increasing. Voltage transformers play a crucial role in stepping down high voltages for safe integration with electrical grids. In particular, they are key in connecting renewable energy generation systems to distribution networks, especially in remote areas.
