The applications of AI servers are very diverse, including image and voice recognition, natural language processing, predictive analytics, personalized recommendation systems, autonomous driving (image recognition), and the medical field (intelligent diagnosis), among others.

For dependable operation, AI servers rely on robust and stable PSUs. The power supply serves as a vital component responsible for converting alternating current (AC) from the electrical grid into the direct current (DC) necessary for the server's electronic components. In the context of high-performance AI servers, the PSU must deliver both ample and stable power to drive CPUs, GPUs, or AI accelerators. Additionally, power supply efficiency is crucial, as it directly influences overall energy consumption and heat dissipation requirements. A highly efficient power supply can minimize energy waste and reduce the demand for heat dissipation, ensuring server stability during high-load operations. Moreover, an efficient power supply can extend its lifespan and mitigate server downtime resulting from power-related issues.

Most AI servers in data centers are powered from the utility AC grid (commonly 110V/220V/277V single-phase or high-voltage three-phase). The AC-DC power supply converts this alternating current into stable low-voltage DC (typically 12V or 48V) that feeds GPUs, CPUs, memory, and other components. AC-based solutions are the mainstream today due to maturity and broad compatibility. In high-performance AI servers, 48V output architectures are increasingly favored because they reduce copper loss, allow thinner cabling, and enable higher power density, which is critical for GPU-dense racks. Some hyperscale data centers (e.g., Google, Meta) deploy direct current distribution with a high-voltage DC bus (commonly 380V DC). Power is conditioned by centralized UPS or HVDC systems and then delivered directly to racks, where DC-DC converters step it down to 48V/12V. This approach reduces the number of AC-DC conversion stages, improving overall energy efficiency and lowering thermal stress. DC distribution is particularly advantageous in ultra-high-power AI clusters (>30kW per rack), where efficiency gains translate into substantial operational cost savings.

In terms of efficiency grade, AI server power supply includes platinum grade and titanium grade. Platinum-certified units must achieve efficiencies of at least 90% / 92% / 89% at 20% / 50% / 100% load levels (under 115V input). In AI servers, Platinum PSUs are widely adopted in mainstream commercial rack systems, balancing cost and efficiency. They help reduce energy waste and heat generation, though at hyperscale AI workloads with sustained high utilization, their performance-per-watt is slightly behind Titanium-grade supplies. Titanium is the highest efficiency standard, requiring ≥ 90% / 94% / 96% / 91% efficiency at 10% / 20% / 50% / 100% load (115V input). Titanium units maintain outstanding efficiency across both light and heavy loads, making them well-suited for GPU-based AI servers where power draw is dynamic and often spiky. While more expensive, Titanium PSUs significantly reduce long-term electricity and cooling costs. As a result, they are increasingly adopted in premium AI servers and large-scale training clusters where total cost of ownership is a critical factor.
