A conformal coating is a thin barrier film that is applied onto printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) for effective environmental protection against damage such as corrosion. Conformal coatings ‘conform’ to the shape of the board and underlying components, providing excellent coverage of delicate circuitries.
Each year the electronics industry is faced with new product designs that call for smaller printed circuit boards (PCBs) to function in more aggressive and rigorous service environments. As demands change, conformal coating is becoming increasingly adopted to ensure PCB reliability in environments where moisture, condensation, dust, dirt, salts, chemicals, abrasion, thermal shock, mechanical shock, and other factors can all affect circuit performance.
Conformal coatings are thin-layer polymers that are applied to the surface of PCBs to protect and electrically insulate the circuit from environmental stresses. Conformal coatings are often an ideal solution for ensuring reliability in harsh or potentially harsh environments.
While the curing mechanism is not a primary criterion when selecting a coating, it has a direct impact on the type of application method that will be feasible, and the throughput that can be expected.
UV Curing - Coatings that are cured using ultraviolet light offer very fast throughputs. They are 100% solid systems with no carrier solvents. UV curing occurs in the production line, so a secondary curing mechanism is needed under the components and in shadowy areas. UV cured coatings are more difficult to repair and rework and require UV curing equipment and UV radiation protection for workers.
The evolution of conformal coatings for protection of PCBs and electronics has accelerated over the past few years. One development in particular has increased in popularity due to a promising array of advantages over its predecessors. These are LED Curable Coatings.
LED curable conformal coatings are showing promise in applications involving white goods and automobiles where high volume throughput combined with low energy and maintenance requirements can be paramount.
