A harmonic drive, also known as a strain wave gear, is a precision speed reduction mechanism that utilizes the elastic deformation of a flexible (or flexspline) wheel meshing with a rigid (or circular spline) wheel and a wave generator to transmit motion and torque. Its operation principle is based on the theory of strain wave transmission, where the wave generator induces a controlled elastic deformation in the flexible wheel, creating a tooth meshing disparity that results in speed reduction and torque multiplication. Characterized by high reduction ratios, compactness, lightweight, high rotational accuracy, and quick response, harmonic drives find extensive applications in industrial robots, precision machinery, aerospace, and more. Harmonic reducers are particularly well-suited for joint sections of industrial robots, as well as other applications requiring high precision, high torque density, and compact designs. The robotics industry is the predominant application field, accounting for over 75% of the revenue market share in harmonic reducers.

From a global perspective, Japan currently holds the core technology of Harmonic Drive and forms a technical barrier to high-performance reducers. It is difficult for companies in other regions to reach their technical level. Due to the strong market demand in China, more and more Chinese companies have entered the industry, and many companies have expansion plans. For example, Shenzhen Han's Motion Technology is a good new entrant. In 2023, the sales volume of harmonic reducers has reached 80,390 units. In the United States, Germany and South Korea also have R&D and production companies.

China holds the largest consumption market share. And its Harmonic Drive sales volume was 1,323.20 K Units in 2023, followed by Japan.
