A bipolar cutting electrode is a medical device commonly used in endoscopic or other surgical procedures to cut or coagulate tissue. A bipolar ablation electrode consists of two electrodes that are usually placed at opposite ends of the same instrument and kept at a distance from each other. Unlike monopolar electrodes, bipolar electrodes do not need to conduct electrical current through the patient"s body when in use, but instead form a closed circuit through the tissue between the electrodes. This avoids additional electrical stimulation or damage to other tissues or organs of the patient. In endoscopic surgery, bipolar ablation electrodes are usually inserted into the patient"s body together with an endoscope through a small incision in the body cavity or a natural orifice in the body cavity. Physicians place electrodes on the target tissue and use the cutting or coagulation function of the electric current to achieve tissue resection or hemostasis.
