Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) is a type of semiconductor detector used to detect X-rays. It is a large area of uniform pn junction prepared on the ray incident surface of a high-purity n-type silicon wafer, a point-shaped n-type anode prepared in the center of the other side, and many concentric p-type drift electrodes around the anode. When working, a reverse voltage is applied to the pn junctions on both sides of the device, thereby generating a potential well (for electrons) in the device body. Applying a potential difference to the drift electrode will generate a transverse electric field in the device, which will bend the potential well and force the signal electrons generated by the incident radiation to drift toward the anode under the action of the electric field, and reach the anode (readout electrode) to generate a signal. SDD is widely used in fields such as energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF) or X-ray energy spectrometer (EDS) due to its high energy resolution, fast response and low noise, especially in X-ray detection occasions requiring high resolution and high sensitivity.
